Rail
Traveling around Europe by train is quick, easy and inexpensive but there a few things that will help make your trip even easier.
Figure out which countries you want to visit, how long you want to stay in each country, then pre-order a Eurail Pass — this is the best way to see Europe!
European train timetables use the 24-hour clock. 1:00 am is 01:00 but 1:00 pm is 13:00; 5 in the morning is 05:00 but 5 in the afternoon is 17:00. To convert the 24 hour clock back to the more familiar Canadian 12 hour system subtract 12 from and add p.m. For example: 22:30 subtract 12:00 is 10:30 p.m.
Worried about catching the right train at the right time? Train schedules may be written in a language other than English but with a bit of patience they can be deciphered. You can find out how long the trip will take, what arrival and departure times are available, what train you’ll be traveling in, and what ticket options are available.
Remember that many European cities have more than one major train station. Paris has six, Brussels has three, and even Switzerland’s little Interlaken has two. A quick check of a map will help you locate the right station that is best for you. Also train; subway, bus or taxi often connects the major train stations so that you can continue your journey with minimal hassle.
Trains in Europe, like trains in Canada, have labels on each car. Make sure that the name on you ticket matches nameplate on the car that you’re boarding. Cars are dropped and added along the trip so if you don’t get on the right car you may be short of your intended destination. Unfortunately there are thieves on trains so clip your luggage to the overhead rack or designate someone security guard.
If you are planning on an overnight trip by train you can reserve a sleeping berth. You have to reserve a day in advance and it will cost you extra but you’ll be able to catch some sleep and travel in comfort.
Traveling by train in Europe is a great way to see the country and meet people. It’s fun, friendly and inexpensive.
